Arlington County, Virginia - an urban county of about 26 square miles located directly across the Potomac River from Washington, DC - has an interesting and unique history. Home to American Indian communities for more than 10,000 years, it was also explored by English settlers in the early 1600s.
Associated with major events in Virginia history for almost 400 years, Arlington was also part of the Federal District for 45 years. Site of a Confederate lookout in the early months of the Civil War, the county was occupied by Federal troops for most of the war.
Characterized as a highly-developed, densely-populated urban area, Arlington is still a county, with no incorporated cities or towns within its boundaries.
